RAPID CITY, SD –Spearfish Regional Hospital (SPRH) diabetes educators will be presenting a Managing Prediabetes class Tuesday, Aug. 17. The class will take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the SPRH Regional Medical Clinic Conference room at 1440 N. Main. Cost of the class is $35 per person and includes a Calorie King book, pedometer, portion plate and cookbook. Pre-registration is required.
The pre-diabetes program focuses on lifestyle changes which can help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. It is also for those that already fall into the prediabetic category. It is tailored for individuals who are overweight, glucose intolerant, insulin resistant or have metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure or problems with cholesterols.
Participants will receive education about healthy meal planning, exercise and ways to reduce other diabetes risk factors. No physician order is necessary to attend the class.
According to the American Diabetes Association, individuals with a higher risk for getting diabetes include: men and women 45 years of age or older, particularly those that are overweight; non-Caucasians; and individuals who have had gestational diabetes; have had a baby weighing more than 9 lbs.; or have high blood pressure or high body fats.
