STURGIS, SD – Regional Health announced today that it has received $1,985,959 in funding over three years from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust for digital mammography services for western South Dakota.
The grant funds will be used to implement and promote digital mammography services in rural western South Dakota. The sites to receive digital mammography equipment are Sturgis Regional Hospital, Queen City Regional Medical Clinic in Spearfish, and Rapid City Regional Hospital.
“Regional Health believes in our mission to provide health care excellence in partnership with the communities we serve,” said Charles Hart, M.D., M.S., President and CEO of Regional Health. “This service is just one way to help us serve the women in our area with the best possible breast cancer screening technology.”
The Helmsley Charitable Trust provides funding for innovative projects that use information technologies to connect rural patients to specialty medical care, provides the latest medical therapies and facilitates programs for underserved populations that places particular stress on existing health care facilities and local governments. The $1.98 million in funding is part of The Rural Health Program of The Helmsley Charitable Trust, which awarded more than $65 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in the upper Midwest.
Regional Health provides a continuum of care through its hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities, and includes Regional Hospitals and Clinics, Regional Medical Clinics, Regional Senior Care, Regional Cancer Care Institute, Regional Heart Doctors, Regional Rehabilitation Institute, and Regional Behavioral Health Center, all serving communities in western South Dakota, southeastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming, southwestern North Dakota, and northwestern Nebraska.
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, established in 1999, is administered by five trustees selected by Leona Helmsley as a continuation of Mr. and Mrs. Helmsley’s generous giving through their lifetimes. The Trust supports a diverse range of organizations with a major focus on health and medical research, in addition to programs in human services, education and conservation.
