Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital Creates New Hospice Rooms

DEADWOOD, SD – Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital (LDRH) recently completed two new hospice rooms and a family room all made possible by local donations. The recently converted regular patient rooms are the first in the Lead-Deadwood area to offer a place for patients who require end-of-life care in a home-like setting.

All rooms are located at the quiet end of a hospital hallway out of the high-traffic area but still close enough to the nurses’ station to provide quick medical attention. Each hospice room features medical equipment for patient care but furnishings that offer the comforts of home. Comfortable chairs that fold out into beds are available in each room, allowing family members or caretakers to stay overnight. The family room has living room furnishings, a television, and activities for children. It is also located close to the cafeteria providing easy access and support for the family.

100 percent of renovations were completed from donations. Thank you to those who donated their time and resources: Hospice of the Northern Hills, Twin City Hardware, Karl’s Furniture, Blue Dog Framers & Studio Gallery, Dr. Jim and Sue Holloway, Bill Schmidt, Beth Jeffrey, Mark Spiers, Ada Henniger, Justin Johns, Quilting Ladies of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Quilting Ladies of First Presbyterian Church.

“We wanted to create a place that offered physical, emotional, and psychological comfort to our patients and their families,” said Sherry Bea Smith, LDRH Chief Executive Officer. “I’m very happy to say I think we have achieved that.”
