Exceptional Nurses & Nurse Advocate Honored at Rapid City Regional Hospital

RAPID CITY, SD - Rapid City Regional Hospital (RCRH) recently honored eight outstanding employees with Nursing Recognition Star Awards.

The Star Awards, developed by RCRH’s Nurse Shared Governance Council, encouraged employees to nominate their fellow nurses for the following awards: Guiding Star–Mentor, Gold Star–Service, Shining Star–Community, Rising Star–Novice, Super Star–Expert, Blazing Star–Advanced Practice and Supporting Star.

The Guiding Star–Mentor Award was presented to Sandy Wright, a Maternal Child Health Nurse. Wright has worked for RCRH for nearly 11 years. She is described by her co-workers as an “excellent teacher with a great deal of patience. Sandy has a calming effect over those she works with.”

The Gold Star–Service Award winner is described as “continually going above and beyond for a family; a true customer service queen.” Melanie Tish, Registered Nurse, Cardiac Interventional Unit, was honored as the Gold Star. Tish has been employed with RCRH for nearly seven years.

Carol Carey, Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department, was chosen as the Shining Star–Community Award winner. Carey was recognized by her peers as “selfless in character, continually serving others.” They also noted she is “an example of kindness.” Carey has worked at RCRH for 19 years.

The Rising Star–Novice Award was presented to Jennifer Hart, a recent nursing graduate currently working in Home Care/Hospice. Hart, who was hired at RCRH in 2008, has made an impact on her coworkers through her ability to “demonstrate passion by continually striving to improve her skills through self-study.”

Carolyn Sigel, Clinical Resource Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, was honored as the Super Star–Expert Award recipient. Sigel, a 16-year employee, was described as a “nurse who routinely thinks outside the box and is able to deal with problems in a calm and competent manner.”

Wendy Asher, Certified Nurse Practitioner was recognized with the Blazing Star–Advanced Practice Nurse Award. Asher, described as an incredible teacher, has nearly 30 years experience in Pediatrics. Fellow staff members look to her as someone who is “supportive, caring and an outstanding role model.”

The Supportive Star Award was presented to Jeanne Anderson, a Health Unit Clerk in Pediatrics and employee of RCRH for the past 23 years. Anderson was recognized by her colleagues as a “remarkable team player who is constantly charismatic and positive.”

The Nurse Advocate Award, intended for a non-nursing employee, was awarded to Dana Darger, RCRH Pharmacy Director. The Nurse Shared Governance Council honored Darger, as he “continually works hard to develop a positive relationship between the pharmacy department and the nurses. He has created a pro-nursing culture where service is key and pharmacists are an unlimited and vital resource for each and every nurse.”

The Nurse Shared Governance Council is an employee-driven council at RCRH formed to create an environment where participatory decision making will occur between staff and leadership regarding nursing professional practice issues which promote clinical autonomy and responsibility, provide opportunities and encouragement for professional development, and effectively utilize staff and resources.
