RAPID CITY, SD – The Rapid City Regional Hospital Foundation and Auxiliary, and Kohl’s Department Store in Rapid City will be holding a Don’t Thump Your Melon Bike Rodeo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22 at Kohl’s, located at 737 Disk Drive.
The rodeo will include bike inspections, an obstacle course, the Rapid City Fire Department Smoke House, and instruction to children about helmet safety. There will also be free helmets available to children in need of one. For those children who already own a helmet, the team will educate children and parents on how to properly fit and wear a helmet.
Don’t Thump Your Melon, a benefactor of the Kohl’s Care for Kids Program, is a helmet safety and head injury prevention education program at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Don’t Thump Your Melon presenters visit Rapid City schools encouraging children to wear a helmet while biking, skating or riding a scooter. They also educate children about the importance of preventing head injuries.
“If even one brain injury for a child or young adult is prevented by our education, then all our efforts are worthwhile,” said Kim Johnson, Don’t Thump Your Melon Program Coordinator. “The generous donation from Kohl’s Care for Kids Program allows us to get this important message out to more children in the Black Hills region.”
